Jasmine rice is a fragrant, slightly sticky, and fluffy rice variety that pairs beautifully with many dishes. Cooking it just right can elevate any meal, but getting the texture perfect takes a little know-how.

I’ve tried different methods to cook jasmine rice, and I’ve found that each way has its own charm. In this article, I will instruct you how to cook jasmine rice in 4 different ways without being soggy.

1. How To Cook Jasmine Rice on Stovetop

Cooking jasmine rice on the stovetop is simple and hands-on. Here’s my method for getting it just right:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1 ½ cups water

Instructions

Rinse the Rice: Start by rinsing the rice under cold water for about 30 seconds to remove excess starch. This will help prevent the rice from becoming too sticky.

Boil the Water: Add the rinsed rice and water to a saucepan. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer.

Simmer and Cook: Allow the rice to cook for about 15 minutes, keeping the lid on. The key here is to let the steam do its work. Don’t open the lid during cooking!

Let It Sit: After 15 minutes, remove the pan from the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for another 5 minutes. This step helps the rice fully absorb the remaining steam.

Fluff and Serve: Fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains. You’re ready to serve!

2. How To Cook Jasmine Rice in Rice Cooker

Rice cookers take the guesswork out of cooking, making it a reliable and hands-off method. If you’re someone who regularly cooks rice, a rice cooker is a great investment. Here’s how I cook jasmine rice in mine:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1 ½ cups water

Instructions

Rinse the Rice: As with stovetop cooking, rinse the rice under cold water to remove extra starch.

Add to Rice Cooker: Place the rinsed rice and water in the rice cooker. If desired, add a pinch of salt for extra flavor.

Set It and Forget It: Close the lid and set your rice cooker to the “white rice” setting. The rice cooker will automatically cook the rice and switch to “keep warm” mode once it’s done.

Fluff and Serve: Let the rice sit for a few minutes after the cooker switches off. Then, open the lid, fluff the rice with a fork, and serve.

I love how consistent and easy the rice cooker is. If you prefer your rice slightly softer, you can increase the water ratio to 1 3/4 cups per cup of rice.

3. How To Cook Jasmine Rice in Instant Pot

Ingredients

  • 2 cup of jasmine rice
  • 2 ½ cup of water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (or use as preferred) (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Start by cleaning the rice under running cool tap water to get rid of dirt and starch. Shake off the excess water and transfer the rice to the instant pot.

Step 2: Add a cup of water and season with salt. Stir the rice once, close the lid, and adjust the valve to seal.

Step 3: Plug in the instant pot and choose a setting

If you choose RICE SETTING then the instant pot will set the time automatically.

If you choose PRESSURE COOKER SETTING then set the time to 3 minutes at a high temperature.

As the jasmine rice finishes cooking (in any of the above settings), let the rice rest in the instant pot for 10 minutes.

In case you have cooked the rice in the pressure cooker setting, release the pressure (after the rice has rested) by turning the valve to venting.

Step 4: Remove the lid, fluff the rice, and serve immediately.

4. How to Cook Jasmine Rice in Microwave

The microwave is the quickest method, and it’s perfect if you don’t want to wait long or don’t have a stove. While it might not give you quite the same results as stovetop cooking or a rice cooker, it’s surprisingly effective:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

Rinse the Rice: Rinse the rice under cold water to wash off the starch, just like you would in the other methods.

Combine Rice and Water: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the rinsed rice, water, and a pinch of salt.

Microwave the Rice: Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid or plastic wrap. Microwave on high for about 10-12 minutes. Check halfway through to ensure the water is still covering the rice. You may need to add a bit more water depending on the power of your microwave.

Let It Sit: Once the rice is done, let it sit for 5 minutes in the microwave to absorb any remaining steam.

Fluff and Serve: Open the bowl, fluff the rice with a fork, and serve.
