Rissoles are a type of Australian and New Zealand meatball or patty made from ground meat and breadcrumbs. They can be baked, fried, or grilled for a quick and easy meal. Rissoles are versatile and can be made with beef, lamb, pork, chicken, or a combination of meats. In this article, I will instruct you how to cook rissoles in the oven, air fryer, and on the stove.
1. How To Cook Rissoles
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tbsp tomato sauce or ketchup
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for frying (if cooking on stove)
Instructions
Oven Baked Method
Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, mix together the ground meat, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, tomato sauce, thyme, salt and pepper until well combined.
Form the mixture into golf ball sized rounds and place on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each rissole.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until cooked through and lightly browned on the outside.
Air Fryer Method
In a large bowl, mix the ingredients together as directed above.
Form mixture into patties and place in the air fryer basket in a single layer, being careful not to overcrowd.
Air fry at 380°F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking, until rissoles are browned and cooked through.
Stovetop Method
In a large skillet, heat 1-2 tbsp oil over medium-high heat.
Form the rissole mixture into patties and carefully place in the hot skillet. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
Work in batches if needed, adding more oil between batches. Cook until rissoles are completely browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes total.
Rissoles pair deliciously with gravy, mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad. For extra flavor, add herbs like rosemary or oregano to the meat mixture. Grill or pan fry for a crispy exterior. Leftover rissoles can be frozen and reheated later for a quick weeknight meal. Enjoy this versatile take on the classic meatball or burger patty!
