2. How To Cook Nopales

  • 1 lb nopales, cleaned and sliced
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 tsp salt

Rinse under cold water and use a knife to scrape off any remaining spines or glochids (tiny hair-like spines). Trim off any very thick parts of the pads for more even cooking. Cut nopales into bite-size pieces or slice them into thin strips.

Fill a medium pot with 4 cups of water and add 1 tsp of salt. Bring to a rapid boil over high heat.

Add nopales and boil 10 minutes. Once the water is boiling, add the sliced nopales. Allow to boil for about 10 minutes, occasionally stirring gently with a spoon or spatula.

After 10 minutes, test a piece of nopal—it should be tender but still have a little crunch. Boil for another 2-3 minutes if they are still tough.

Drain the cooked nopales in a colander and rinse under cold running water to cool quickly. This stops the cooking process.
