The T-bone steak is a classic cut of beef that offers a mouthwatering combination of tenderloin and strip loin, separated by a T-shaped bone. Known for its rich flavor and juicy texture, cooking a T-bone steak to perfection requires the right techniques and attention to detail. In this article, I will instruct you how to cook a T-bone steak in 3 different ways

1. How To Cook a T Bone Steak in Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 (1-1.5 inch thick) T-bone steak
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Take the T-bone steak out of the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Pat dry with paper towels.

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, garlic and rosemary. Rub the mixture all over the steak on both sides. Generously season both sides with salt and pepper.

Place the seasoned steak on a baking sheet lined with foil or directly on the oven rack.

Roast for 15-20 minutes for medium-rare doneness, flipping halfway through. Check for doneness by using a meat thermometer – it should read 125°F.

Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving. The steak will continue to cook slightly as it rests.

2. How To Cook a T Bone Steak on Grill

Ingredients

  • 1 (1-1.5 inch thick) T-bone steak
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp montreal steak seasoning
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Take the steak out of the fridge and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before grilling. Pat dry.

Prepare the grill by heating to high heat. Carefully oil the grates right before putting the steak on.

Coat both sides of the steak evenly with the vegetable oil. Generously season both sides with montreal steak seasoning, salt and pepper.

Place the steak directly on the hot grill grates. Sear untouched for 2-3 minutes to get grill marks. Flip and sear the other side for another 2-3 minutes.

Move the steak to a cooler part of the grill, close lid and cook for 8-12 minutes more, flipping halfway through for medium-rare doneness. Use a meat thermometer to check – 125°F for medium-rare.

Remove from grill and let rest 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

3. How To Cook a T Bone Steak on Stove

Ingredients

  • 1 (1-1.5 inch thick) T-bone steak
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Take the steak out of the fridge and let come to room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking. Pat dry.

Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

Melt the butter in a cast iron or stainless steel skillet over high heat until hot and starting to brown.

Add the steak and sear for 2-3 minutes per side, flipping once. Turn heat down to medium.

Add the garlic and thyme sprig to the pan and cook for another 8-10 minutes, flipping every 2 minutes for even cooking, until steak reaches 125°F for medium-rare doneness.

Remove steak from skillet and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing to serve. Spoon pan juices over the top.

No matter which cooking method you choose, letting the T-bone steak come to room temperature before cooking and resting before slicing are key to ensuring it turns out juicy and flavorful every time. Follow these simple recipes for perfectly cooked T-bone steak.
